The 6dot Braille Labeler was created to allow people who are blind or visually impaired identify objects more easily. By providing a portable, intuitive tool to print Braille labels, the 6dot incorporates the best features of existing labeling technology into an innovative device that also addresses many remaining issues with other labeling methods. The six-key interface lets the user type any six-dot Braille character, including all Grade 2 contractions, and the keyboard will feel familiar to anyone who is accustomed to typing on a standard Braille note-taker or typewriter.
After printing a label, the label tape is trimmed by a sliding cutter activated at the back of the device. This cutter not only cuts the label to size, it also makes a second incision onto the label tape. The incision leaves a small tab on the completed label, greatly facilitating the usually difficult task of peeling off the label’s adhesive backing before application. The 6dot Braille Labeler uses ½” wide labeling tape and AA batteries, both of which are commonly available in any office supply store. A battery-powered labeler translates into high quality Braille, in contrast with purely mechanical methods. Mechanical methods of embossing usually rely on the user’s strength, which can sometimes make them difficult to use, and which can also result in irregular Braille printing. Based on suggestions from members of focus groups, a carrying strap was added to 6dot Braille Labeler for better portability and printing on the go. With a rounded shape that matches the curves of the hand, the 6dot has become a comfortable, easy to use printer of Braille labels.
